Cajun Drinking Songs Album Announcement
Published July 18th, 2006 in News
Slated to come out on December 1st, 2006, Allons Boire un Coup: Cajun and Creole Drinking Songs will be at times dark, at times raucous, and mostly both. Assembled under the artistic direction of Josh Caffery, a carefully selected group of talented Louisiana artists will record a group of songs that contribute to the humor and lore of a darker aspect of Cajun culture. Packaging will feature the art of Louisiana’s Claire Oliver and Internationally respected photographer Debbie Fleming Caffery (that’s her photo accompanying this post at left, see more on her website at debbieflemingcaffery.com).
This album will appeal to people who follow Cajun music, as well as people who have only a cursory interest in Cajun music, but may need something to draw them in. One of the challenges facing Cajun music is the difficulty of overcoming the linguistic and cultural barrier; most people don’t understand Cajun French, but they understand drinking. So, people who like drinking will be drawn to this album. In other words, this album will appeal to people who will buy into the familiar idea of Cajuns as happy-go-lucky party animals, as well as those who realize that the tradition is not one-dimensional, and indeed goes much deeper: into drinking as it relates to love, life, loss, etc.
