August Artist of the Month: The Figs

Just a couple of years ago, this group of girls got tired of watching their friends jam out at parties without them. So, they got together to try their hands at playing and singing their own favorite songs – just for the heck of it. Whoops, the dynamic sound that resulted was enough to steal the hearts of many fans in the Lafayette area. After a few practices and gigs, it was clear they had something special.

As they have evolved their skills in playing and songwriting and learned to work together like magic, they have built a significant national fan base and an impressive repertoire. Now, their haunting harmonies and eclectic energies have launched them into becoming one of Louisiana’s hottest acts – getting hotter all the time.

Our latest Artist of the Month entry features tracks from their fantastic new album, What Keeps Me Up At Night. Enjoy!

February Artist of the Month: Cedric Watson

He’s all over the place!

Cedric Watson’s debut solo cd out on Valcour Records is now shipping. The Pine Leaf Boys were nominated for the first ever Cajun and Zydeco GRAMMY category, thanks in no small part to Cedric’s contribution. The Red Stick Ramblers feature Cedric  playing a five star chef in their debut music video for Made in the Shade (see it at redstickramblers.com).

And now, he’s our February 2008 Artist of the Month! Where will he pop up next? Hopefully at a music venue near you.

January Artist of the Month: Chas Justus

This month we’re featuring one of South Louisiana’s hottest singer/songwriter/guitar bad@$$es, Chas Justus. His music has been played by Linda Rondstadt on her Grammy-nominated album, Adieu False Heart, and as a founding member of the Red Stick Ramblers, he is part of the backbone of the South Louisiana music scene. Not to mention, he does (and will continue to if we are lucky) appear in some capacity on most Valcour releases.

Check it out as Chas features his skills as a front man on our latest entry of Artist of the Month!

December Artist of the Month: Gill Landry

This month we’re featuring a well-traveled, infinitely versed, and paradoxically cynicoptimistcal artist from Lake Charles/Seattle named Gill Landry. Gill has recently released a fantastic album with the Nettwerk Music Group called The Ballad of Lawless Soirez. He plays music all over the U.S. and Europe, with substantial followings in the Deep South and the Pacific Northwest.

But please, decide for yourself what you think of Gill – after all you can listen (but not download) to his music right here, as he is December’s Artist of the Month!

Valcour Podcast #3: Summer News

In this latest Valcour podcast, Lucius shares some music and news about how Valcour spent the summer and what kind of projects we have coming up. We are experiencing some temporary technical difficulties getting this podcast onto the iTunes feed, but it will be up there soon enough. It’s not rocket science, we just aren’t natural born coders. In the meantime you can download the file right here (m4a, 12.9 megs).

Enjoy!

Mardi Gras! Valcour Podcast #2

Mardi Gras Faq-ue-tig-ue Valcour RecordsFat Tuesday is only a couple of days away!

In our continuing effort to provide fans with a more complete musical experience, Valcour Records has assembled this recording to highlight the history of one of Louisiana’s most unique and identifying traditions, one that traces all the way back to the state’s heritage in France: Mardi Gras.

Most people worldwide think of the parades and fanfare of New Orleans when they think of Mardi Gras. In this Valcour podcast, host Lucius Fontenot explores with former Eunice Mardi Gras Captain Albert Rozas a version of “Carnival” that you won’t see in New Orleans. Once a year in the prairies of Acadiana, riders on horseback traverse the countryside gathering the ingredients for a big gumbo from their neighbors, all the while accompanied by music and a party. The underlying idea: community – A feeling of community that’s harder to preserve each year.

Not that Mardi Gras doesn’t involve community in other locations, but in general today, its rare to find a place or occasion where people can knock on their neighbor’s doors for miles and miles to gather ingredients for a communal meal!

This podcast features a clip from Professor Longhair’s Go to the Mardi Gras, versions of La Danse de Mardi Gras performed by Linzay Young and an old recording (La Vieille Danse de Mardi Gras) by Edius Naquin.

Corey and Cedric Blue Moon Video

The “Goin’ Down to Louisiana” CD Release Party at the Blue Moon in Lafayette was a hit and the boys packed the house. What a way to ring in the opening night of Festival International! Wilson Savoy, of Almena Pictures (or perhaps you know him from The Pine Leaf Boys), was kind enough to film Corey and Cedric’s exciting performance. We’ve posted a sample for you here on the site (you will need the free quicktime player to view this video):
