At first glance, the track listing of “Spirited Melancholy” may seem like merely another collection of jazz standards, but look just under the surface and you’ll find a production with a woeful sparkle that could have only been imagined by the highly sought after and reclusive production team of Clarence and Clarice.
In the wake of the pandemic, which has hit musicians very hard (as it has many others), we are offering the option – but not the obligation – for you to add a donation on top of your download purchase to further support production of this release.
They luckily were not busy due to the on-going COVID-19 Pandemic and by chance happened to be swinging through Lafayette, Louisiana in early August of 2020. They stopped in a local restaurant for a cocktail where they happened upon K.C. Jones and Daniel Coolik. After a long evening of drinking tequila and absinthe with their newfound friends, they began searching frantically through records trying to find a record, a sound, a vibe, an atmosphere they needed, one they referred to as “Spirited Melancholy”.
It had to be a high and a low, like an opiate that makes you float on your feelings of longing for a love, but doesn’t leave you hungover and clinging to the love lost. In this pursuit, they decided that they should record a couple songs to bring this sentiment to life.
Two songs turned into six reimagined songs from the Great American Songbook (well really five with a Françoise Hardy outlier). Clarence and Clarice, whose back catalogue has yet to be reissued due to licensing disputes, have found musical and visionary compatriots in the dual-threat of multi-instrumentalist Daniel Coolik and the intuitive vocal artistry of K.C. Jones. So dim the lights and step aboard this train you didn’t know you needed to ride. A bittersweet memory and a stiff drink is the ticket as you steam off into the unknown
