Sabra and the Get Rights is a band reminiscent of the days when Hank Williams’ injected some blues into his country soul, harkening back to the 1950s when honky tonk bands made sure the dance floor was full and pumping. If you are aware that the great and late Ray Price invented the shuffle beat, then you will love Sabra and the Get Rights. If your tapping toes inevitably lead you to kick up your heels on the dance floor if the right band is on the stage, then you will love Sabra and the Get Rights. Sabra and the Get Rights are made up of accomplished musicians who enjoy each other’s talent and company as they all have the desire to give the people what they want. The group includes Sabra Guzmán on guitar and vocals, David Greely on fiddle and vocals, Joel Savoy on electric guitar, Roger Kash on mandolin, Charles Vincent on drums and vocals and Jo Vidrine on upright bass.
Guzmán has been in roots music bands of various stripes in places like the Shenandoah Valley and Blue Ridge foothills of Virginia, and now the beautiful and vibrant area in and around Lafayette, Louisiana. Greely is the original fiddler of the renowned group Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys and is a true Cajun who pays tribute to his heritage with every note. Greely apprenticed with the legendary fiddler Dewey Balfa, is a winner of the Louisiana Artist Fellowship Award for Folklife performance, a four-time Granny Award nominee and is currently a Cajun Fiddle instructor at the University of Louisiana. Savoy comes from an acclaimed family of Cajun musicians that include his parents, Marc and Ann Savoy, and they all still perform together as the Savoy Family Cajun Band. On his own, Savoy is a Grammy Award winner and nine-time nominee, the founder of Valcour Records and he runs Studio SavoyFaire in Eunice, LA. Kash is a radio host on KRVS in Lafayette and an expert musicologist, Vincent has his hand in many different aspects of the music business and Vidrine has played in bands ranging from David Greely and the GumboJets to Les Malfecteurs.
“The sound of the Get Rights is fun, energetic and lively,” says Guzmán. “Our music is based on what my musical influences have been over the 37 years I’ve been on this Earth. I love Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn, but there is also tons of Buck Owens in the mix. When I first started playing the guitar, I was learning a bunch of Lefty Frizzell and Ray Price songs. This band also has a Bob Wills and Milton Brown western swing feel to it. I’m also a huge fan of Dwight Yoakam and The Mavericks. In some ways, the music stays in the decades of the late 1940s to the late 1960s, but we also appreciate those bands of the last 20 years that have been putting out great honky tonk bar music. We play tight and fun dance music.”
