About the Album

Lafayette/New Orleans collective Boma Bango returns with On va voir, a new record out on Valcour Records(late summer/early fall 2026) that channels the spirit of 1960s–70s Congolese rumba without copying it. Rooted in the hypnotic, reverb-washed electric guitars, shimmering tremolo and propulsive grooves of that Golden Age, On va voir reimagines those textures through the heat, cadence and vernacular of Southwest Louisiana. The result is original, improvisational music that honors itsinfluences while staking out its own sound. Led by guitarist and founder Daniel Coolik, Boma Bango formed in 2018 from a shared fascination with early Congolese styles—music born of Cuban son and African melody—and with a desire to translate those impulses into a distinctly Southwest Louisiana context. The band writes in Louisiana French and draws on Francophone connections to deepen its dialogue with the past while remaining forward-looking. On va voir was recorded and arranged to emphasize mood and momentum: interlocking guitars, sinewy saxophone lines, deep rolling bass, layered percussion, and warm vocal harmonies that evoke late-night bars and humid street corners, not as pastiche but as a new place the music might have traveled. The ensemble features Daniel Coolik (electric guitar), Trey Boudreaux (bass), Megan Brown Constantin (vocals, percussion), Doug Garrison (drums), Cesar Bacaro (congas, percussion), and Tim McFatter (saxophones), often augmented by Jafet Perez, Aurora Nealand, and Brad Webb. On va voir is a conversation across oceans and eras—anaffirmation that traditions can be points of departure, not templates.

“It’s not hard to imagine an only slightly alternate worldin which a brand of rumba took root and flourished in theheart of Acadiana, just as it did in Africa in the heart ofthe Congo” - offBeat, Steve Hochman, Sept 2021
